Costa Brava Details

Back in the 1950s, the then Franco government of Spain decided to start developing the area for the tourism industry after seeing the great potential benefits that it offered. Within some years, it became a popular package holiday destination for people from all over northern Europe, especially tourists from France and the UK.

With a great number of beautiful beaches, a very warm summer climate and wondrous nature, it made sense for the government of Spain to exploit the area for tourists. A large number of hotels and tourist resorts began construction within the following years, including the construction of Blanes, Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar as popular resorts.

Unfortunately, withthe great amount of development in the area, some parts have been spoiled by so many crowds and high-rises but there are some places which have retained some traditional appearance, becoming hidden gems for those visitors who want to experience a bit more of the real Spain.

Some of the lesser known tourist attractions along the Costa Brava include the small town ofCadaques near the French border by thePyrenees. The place has attracted artists such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali over the years and there are now museums there dedicated to them.

Also, the coast between Tossa de Mar and Roses offers a number of very pleasant and manageable coastal towns and villages.

In northeasternCatalonia is the coastal stretch of land called Costa Brava, orWild Coast in English. The area extends from Blanes, not far from Barcelona, all the way to the border with France.
