Costa Brava Details


Geography and climate.
The town of Sant Feliu de Guixols is situated inland on the Costa Brava, between the coastal towns of Castell d'Aro and Santa Cristina d'Aro. The main municipality is located in the bay of Sant Feliu, among the hills of Sant Elm and Forques.
The countryside is surrounded by hills and
forests of pine, oak and cork trees.
The climate is Mediterranean and one can enjoy mild temperatures all year
round.
Road
The main access to town is by road.
The main road C-65 allows the link to the C-31 and then connects to the Mediterranean motorway and the main roads of Catalonia.
There are two exits - Sant Feliu the I Nord South that brings you to the city.
Similarly, the C-253 connects the city with
the neighbouring towns, as S'Agaro, Playa de Aro and Palamos, just as the
GI-682 connects Sant Feliu de Guixols to Tossa de Mar.
Port
The port of San Feliu de Guixols has become
primarily a marina.
Rail
Business
The town of Sant Feliu was one of the most important centres of the cork industry until the financial crisis of the 30s. The town converted to tourism with a distinct character, when the 50 Sant Feliu de Guixols joined for this purpose.
At present, tourism is without doubt the main source of income however there is still some working in the cork fields.
It is a town with an excellent range of services from shopping malls to bars and restaurants, to mention a few. There is a very crowded market that is held every Sunday and it started centuries ago.
Festivals
The Carnival: The city of Sant Feliu is situated in an area known for its carnival celebrations, which take place in February. Carnivals have taken place in this area for decades now.
International Festival of the Porta Ferrada: Established in 1958, it is the oldest of the Catalonia festivals and is held at different locations in the city like the Monastery Port theatre, and the Municipal Auditorium.
Over the years the festival has grown in international importance and is one of the major festivals encompassing theatre, music and dance. This is a summer festival.
The Annual Festival: This Festival is called
the traditional Catalan Festa Major de poblacions and is held August 1. It is
the main festival of Sant Feliu.

From 968AD until the twentieth century the building has
undergone many renovations. Today, the
historic part is made up of different eras and styles.

In recent years, it has become an important holiday destination. The reputation
built by Carmen Cervera, who was behind the creation of a museum in the
monastery, built in 1723 by Benedictine monks.

Porta Ferrada, the ruins of this building were the palace of an abbot or a

The Monastery Romanesque is tenth century, The Torre de Fum, tenth to twelfth century, The Gothic church, fourteenth to fifteenth century. The Sagristía is from the sixteen to seventeen century, the Arc de Sant Benet, of the eighteenth century and the Chapel of Sant Elm was built in 1723 on the ruins of the ancient castle of defence.
The Mass for the late Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemiszas was held there. You can enjoy a panoramic view of the coast, from this viewpoint. There are stories that the journalist Ferran Agullo had the idea to christen the Costa Brava with the same name.Worthy of mention are the buildings built
at the end of the nineteenth century see House Albertí, Bell House built in 1911,
the Gaziel House 1880, the Girbau House 1910, the Maynegre House 1898, the
Maruny House 1909, the Chest House 1894, the Ribot House 1904, the Chamber
House 1904 and the Sibils House 1892.
The City Council
Built in 1547, and constructed in a sober late Gothic style in the
architectural vernacular of the time. The City Hall has survived the
destructions of war and property speculation. The current building has an added
tower built in 1847 and a further extensions were done in the late 1940 and 50s
of the twentieth century.

The station was a Symbol of progress until 1969 after which the line was closed and the building today houses a public school.
Pedralta
It is the largest stone piling in Europe. It is situated between the towns of
Santa Cristina de Aro and San Feliu de Guixols.
The promenade
Opened in 1833 between the old medieval town and the beach, little by little
this great urban space developed as a tree-lined avenue and the old fisherman
cottages were replaced with modern houses. Old mansions can be seen as Patxot
House now the Offices of the Chamber of Commerce for the City
The avenue road is stately in a historical sense and is considered one of the most beautiful and noble walks on the Mediterranean coast.
The Casino
The Casino is housed in a modernist building, better known by the nickname casino dels nois. The Casino building was designed and built by the architects at General Guitart in 1888.
The House Patxot
Located at number 40 of the Passeig del Mar.
Casa Rafael's rich industrial Patxot was built between 1917 and 1920 by architect John Albert Torner.
This is the most important preserved manor house in the city.
For a long time the house was the astronomical observatory of Patxot.
Today it houses the Chamber of Commerce,
Industria i Navegacio de Sant Feliu de Guixols.
Houses
The city had an increasingly affluent middle class dedicated to the business of
cork production, San Felíu de Guixols was a builder who built these homes in
the most charming places of the city.
