Port

The municipality of Girona has no access or maritime enclave and, therefore, has no port in the municipality. But Girona historically had rights to the port of San Feliu de Guixols, 40 km from the city. In medieval times Girona got to recognize its jurisdiction over the port, which meant control of all taxes arising from the use and security, with full rights to the small port on the Mediterranean Sea.

At present Girona has no rights to the port of San Feliu de Guixols, which has been replaced with, in terms of importance, the port of Palamos, the main port infrastructure in the province of Girona and is located about 40 km from the capital city of Girona.

Airport

The airport infrastructure that serves the city of Girona and the rest of the province is the airport of Girona-Costa Brava, located on Vilobi Onyar d’, 12 km from the city.

Since its creation in 1969, the airport infrastructure was a second-order, reserved only for domestic and charter flights, but it became a first-class infrastructure for the arrival of low-cost carriers in 2003.

Because of this the airport of Girona-Costa Brava ceased to be an airport in the province of Girona and became a national- and state-level airport. It is the central airport of southern Europe, one of the largest low-cost airlines, with Irish Ryanair flights.

Rail

Girona has an ADIF railway station (before RENFE) connected to the national railway with a gauge of 1668 mm.

There are three types of trains that connect to the city.

Regional trains (Regional/Catalunya Express): Connecting the city with Portbou, Figueras, Barcelona, and other towns in the province of Girona and the neighboring province of Barcelona Granollers.

Long-distance trains (Talgo / Star): Girona joins with the main cities along the Mediterranean and Madrid.

International Trains: Girona joins Perpignan, Narbonne, Montpellier, Limoges, Orleans, Paris, Geneva, Zurich, Milan, and Turin.

The rail infrastructure in Girona circulates through a viaduct that crosses the city from north to south. Today, with the advent of high-speed trains, the city has drafted a plan that projects an underground railroad, which dismantles the existing freight station and constructs a new passenger station in the same place as the current station.

The city of Girona has a single group of urban public transport: the bus. The Consortium Transport (CTM) operates the Interurbans Transports Electrics (TEISA) and Transports Municipals de Girona (TMG), which currently have 11 urban lines that exceed the boundaries of the municipality of Girona, encompassing the neighboring municipalities of Salt, Sarria de Ter, Quart, Fornells de la Selva, and VILABLAREIX, which is considered the urban area of Girona.

Across the road a number of buses circulating metropolitan, regional, and national ares connect the rest of the stocks Girona. Thus there are regular lines that connect to Girona in San Feliu de Guixols, Santa Coloma de Farners, Olot and Lloret de Mar, and all the small and medium-size stocks that are on the tour. The central bus station is right next to the railway station.

Roads

A large number of roads cross the town of Girona, given that it is a place of passage to the Costa Brava inward and toward the border with France. In the network of trunk roads is the toll motorway AP-7 (Autopista del Mediterraneo), which is the large corridor that connects the Mediterranean to the French border, and A-2 (old N-II), a former radial trunk road that is slowly being transformed into a railcar.

This road crosses the town of Girona in the natural and protected Valley San Daniel. There was construction on this road between the years 1990 and 1992 which received a strong popular opposition because it crossed an area of great natural and scenic value.

The autonomous roads crossing Girona are: C-65, C-66, N-141, and, indirectly, the C-25. The C-65 joins with the coastal city Girona Girona San Feliu de Guixols; the C-66 connects to Palafrugell and La Bisbal del Ampurdan Banolas Besalu, where it connects with State Highway A-26; the N-141 connects Girona with Bescano Angles and follows the river Ter; finally, the C-25, the so-called cross-cutting links to Girona to Santa Coloma de Farners, Vich, Manresa, and Cervera, joins the A-2.

Ultimately, the provincial roads are maintained by the Diputacion de Girona and connect the villages to the capital.
