It is used to store
archaeological excavations of Ampurdan from 1846; the provincial museum was
installed in 1857. In 1992 a section of the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia
underwent modernization. The museum contains archaeological material from the
prehistoric times and ancient times (Iberian, Greek, and Roman).
What was found in the province
of Girona was not sent to the stores
of Barcelona,
for example, the statue of Piarist d’ Empuries. You can see tombstones, tiles,
and materials they used daily. The museum also covers the medieval period with
sets of epigraph
Art Museum: Founded in 1976, the museum is situated in the old Episcopal palace of Girona, near the cathedral. The museum
contains collections of all periods, from Romanesque to the contemporary
period, with works by Ramon Marti i Alsina and Joaquim Vayreda.
The exhibits range
from art to decorative arts. The main collections are medieval, among which is the
altar of AMPURDANES monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes.
Chapter House Museum-Treasure of the Cathedral: A museum dedicated to the relics and valuables
accrued by the Chapter of the Cathedral of Girona. You can see collections
devoted to art, liturgical objects, and works of goldsmiths. Among these pieces
are the Blessed Liebana, done at Saragossa
in 975, and the Tapestry of the Creation of the 11th or 12th century.
Museum of Cinema: Launched in 1998, this museum is unique in
this category. Created from the donation of funds under the Catalan film
director Tomas Mallol, it contains a wide variety of film material, such as
projection equipment, reels, original films, and a remarkable depth of posters.
Museum of Jewish History: A museum dedicated to the history of the Jewish
community of Girona from medieval times, the 11th-century pogrom of 1391, up
until the expulsion in 1492. The museum contains objects of Jewish culture and
a rich collection of tombstones from the Jewish cemetery in Montjuic.
Museum of the City: Located in the heart of Old Town, in the
former convent of the Capuchin 18th century and subsequent provincial institute
(1845–1968), the museum looks at the history of the city of Girona from its earliest prehistoric settlers,
through the medieval splendor, up to today.
The collections
include archaeological and historical objects and illustrations of each period,
with maps and explanatory models. You can also visit the monastery and the
cemetery of the old convent. The building is the Municipal Archives.
